What your hairstylist wishes you knew about inspiration photos
Bringing inspiration photos to your hair appointment is one of the best ways to show your stylist what you have in mind. Whether you’ve saved a few looks from Pinterest, Instagram, or your favourite celebrity, photos can help turn an idea that’s a little hard to describe into something you and your stylist can actually discuss.
But there’s a little more to a good inspiration photo than simply saying: “I want this.” Here’s what your hairstylist wishes you knew before your next consultation!
Bring more than one photo
If possible, save a few examples of what you like. One photo might have the colour you love, while another has the placement, length, or overall feel you’re going for.
Seeing multiple photos can also help your stylist spot the common thread between them. You might think you’re drawn to a particular shade of blonde when what you actually love is the soft dimension or brighter pieces around the face.
Tell us what you like about the photo
Two people can look at the exact same hairstyle and notice completely different things. Instead of simply showing your stylist a photo, point out what caught your eye. Is it the warmth? The brightness? The contrast? The way the layers frame the face?
Knowing why you saved a photo can be just as helpful as the photo itself!
Understand where your hair is at
Inspiration photos are a great reference, but your final result will still be unique to you. Your natural colour, previous colour services, hair texture, density, length, and overall condition can all affect what’s realistically achievable. Some transformations may also take more than one appointment to achieve while keeping your hair healthy.
Your stylist can use your inspiration to create a plan that makes sense for your hair rather than trying to replicate someone else’s result exactly.
Remember that the photo might not be the full story
That effortlessly thick and perfectly blended hair in your inspiration photo may have had a little help.
A lot of the photos we see online feature extensions, professional styling, strategic lighting, filters, or editing. There’s also AI to worry about. Even when the colour itself is completely achievable, the fullness, length, movement, or overall finish you love may not come from colour or a haircut alone.
That doesn’t mean the photo isn’t useful! Your stylist can help break down what you’re actually seeing, what may be the result of extensions or styling, and what can realistically be recreated with your own hair.
Consider the maintenance
That effortless-looking colour you saved might require appointments every six weeks, or it might grow out beautifully for months, and you may not know until you show us your inspiration.
Let your stylist know how often you realistically want to visit the salon and how much time you spend styling your hair at home. They can help adapt the look so it works with your routine, not just on the day you leave the salon after we’ve styled it for you.
Don’t worry about finding the “perfect” photo
Remember that your inspiration photos aren’t instructions, they’re conversation starters! Even photos of what you don’t like can be useful. The goal is to give your stylist a clearer picture of your preferences so you can make decisions together.
So, keep saving those screenshots. Inspiration photos don’t need to perfectly match your hair type, or even be completely realistic, to be helpful. The more your stylist understands what you’re drawn to and what you’re not, the easier it is to create a plan and a result that feels like you.
